Description

We are very fortunate to welcome distinguished Canadian photographer, Geoffrey James, to our club. Mr. James was appointed the first ever Photographer Laureate of Toronto in 2016, and fortunately for us he has recently returned to Montreal. Although he began his career as journalist, Mr. James initial photographic works represented “the bucolic and utopian.” More recently, his projects demonstrate his roots as a journalist and his “fascination with the effects humans have had on the rural and urban landscape.”

His honours include the Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts, the Canada Council’s Victor Lynch Staunton Prize, and the Roloff Beny Foundation Photography Book Award. Mr. James is a Fellow of the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in Fine Arts, Chicago and a Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, New York. A retrospective of his work, Utopia/Dystopia: The Photographs of Geoffrey James was mounted by the National Gallery of Canada in 2008. This is an LCC meeting at Stewart Hall that you won’t want to miss.
