Défi

Architecture : Dévoilement du défi – 151 bâtiments, Paysage : Tutoriel d’astrophotographie *HYBRIDE*

  • Lundi 23 novembre 2026
  • 20 h 00 – 22 h 00

1 Annual-Botanical Name.JPG

2 Perennial-Botanical Name.JPG

3 Edible Botanicals-Botanical Name.JPG

4 Poisonous Botanicals-Botanical Name.JPG

  • Lundi 19 janvier 2026
  • 20 h 00 – 22 h 00

The Fauna Group is honoured to present guest speaker and LCC member Peter Stubley who will take us for an underwater photographic journey.

Peter has been a very active member of LCC since 2018 serving as a chair, a judge and leader of a number of image improvement workshops. His passion for photography and for diving has led him to work hard to master underwater photography.

His photography is driven by light: “I am always looking for how to use light to accentuate what drew my eye, why I took the photo in the first place. One of the reasons I like underwater photography is that light is even more magical underwater. “

Peter will share pictures from his newest underwater adventures and how he has solved the post-processing puzzle of how to adjust the lighting (lightening and darkening selective areas) to make his original vision more impactful.

  • Lundi 12 janvier 2026
  • 20 h 00 – 22 h 00

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the meeting initially planned as Webex-only for January 12th now becomes hybrid. And we are excited to present to our members a talk by Pascal Normand, a local visual artist, who works very much out of the box.

Originally involved in television and film production in the late 1990s, Pascal Normand passionately embraced and united night photography, digital work, and the vibrant art of aerosol painting. He is active in the visual arts since 2009, his works leaving a mark on the collective imagination and highlighting the cultural value of the built heritage that surrounds us.

Pascal gained recognition as a professional visual artist in 2012. Since then, he has continued to develop his art, bringing to life on his canvases a unique perspective on built heritage. In the quiet of the night, Pascal Normand hunts for the brilliance of industrial landscapes and the architectural gems of built heritage. In fact, night photography initiates an alchemy where digital art and aerosol textures restore the magic of places, giving birth to an original, powerful, and unique work.

On January 12, from Stewart Hall in hybrid mode, Pascal will share his unique artistry process and showcase his highly original works.

Open Competition Reveal

Reveal of the submissions to the Open Competition.

NEW THIS YEAR
This year we decided to shake things up a bit by holding the Open competition as the first competition of the season rather than the last. We figured this would be a good way to warm everyone up for the rest of the competitions!

What's so special about the Open?
Well for one thing... it's open to all genres of photography, so go crazy!
And for another, you, the members, are invited to try your hand at evaluating and scoring the submitted images based on what you think they deserve. Fun, eh? Actually, it's quite challenging. You have to really look at the images, not just swipe them away. A good exercise for every photographer, so try it out! This field trip will offer you an opportunity to explore your camera, develop your eye and meet other club members for some creative fun. It will be a photography boot camp.

Some might be interactive. What can you find in a parking lot?

Bring your camera and your cell phone - or just your phone if that is your camera. Some settings will be unavailable on a phone without specialized apps.

We will meet for coffee and a chat afterwards.

After the shoot, participants will be invited to submit 10–15 images each to be assembled in a slideshow that will be shared with the club. Participants and observers alike will be invited to share thoughts, impressions, and discoveries.

Travelogue evening *HYBRID*

  • Lundi 22 septembre 2025
  • 20 h 00 – 22 h 00

Many of our members have travelled over the past year to places far and away. And, of course, they returned home with a gazillion images and spent countless hours sorting and processing them. So tonight we're going to let four LCC members put all that hard work to good use by showing us their best images from those travels. You might even learn valuable photographic tips for your next vacation!

Also on the agenda for the evening: Many of our members, old and new, still have trouble navigating Webex. So, Silvio Marchei will present valuable information on using Webex for the general membership, including responses to pre-submitted questions.

An inspiring, entertaining and educational evening for sure!

The Art of Macro

Join us for this special Saturday afternoon presentation organized by the Flora group. Our guest speaker will be Tony North, a photographer based in Manchester, England whose main passions are macro (mainly insects, flowers and fungi) and landscape photography, especially astrophotography.

"I have always loved nature, but there's something about spending a few hours in a wildflower meadow capturing images of butterflies and dragonflies that really excites me. I love revealing the amazing beauty of the world of miniature beasts, and sharing that with others. Equally I love walking through and photographing beautiful scenery - whether rural, coastal or urban. A special interest of mine is astrophotography - especially capturing the Milky Way over some dramatic scene."

Tony was awarded International Garden Photographer of the Year in 2023 and finished 2nd in the Amateur Photographer of the Year competition in 2020.

Hope to see you all online.

Shooting the Impossible: The Power of Pre-Visualized Images

Adventure photography can be opportunistic, fuelled by the adrenaline of the moment and the desire to document a journey. But, for Paul Zizka, adventure photography has become something more: an opportunity for play and pre-visualization, and a process where imagination means real-time conditions to conjure and capture “the impossible”.

Paul Zizka is an award-winning mountain landscape and adventure photographer and photo educator based in Banff, Canada. A prolific adventurer, Paul’s journey to capture the “under-documented” has taken him to all seven continents. He is frequently published in National Geographic, Wall Street Journal, Alpinist, Maclean’s, Canadian Geographic, Islands, and Outdoor Photographer, and has four coffee-table photography books. His client list includes Canon, Apple, Dell, Arc’Teryx, Panasonic and MEC. In his latest project, Cryophilia, Paul is documenting vanishing ice around the world to showcase its beauty and raise awareness of our changing landscapes.

In this workshop, Paul will pull back the curtain on some of his most memorable photographs, what it takes to create stand-out images, the resources he uses to plan and execute them, and the impact these photographs have made in both his business and his life as an artist. Consider this your backstage pass to the intricacies of Paul’s most cutting-edge imagery.

Reflection occurs when light traveling through one material bounces off a different material. The reflected light continues to travel in a straight line, but in a different direction. Here are some things to remember about reflection:

Refraction
Not only can light bounce off materials, it can also sometimes travel through materials. When light travels through a uniform material, like air, it goes in straight lines. When light travels through one material and into a second material, interesting things happen!

  • 176 Lakeshore Drive, Pointe-Claire, QC, Canada

Our double header tonight includes the reveal of two exciting challenges that many members participated in.

Architecture Challenge Reveal: My Favourite Building
Whether you are an architectural buff, or just a casual observer of the built world, you probably can tell us about a building that stands out as your favourite. The reasons for our choices are undoubtedly as varied as our personalities. Perhaps you admire the work of its architect, maybe you worked in said building, and it brings back memories, or you find it so striking and representative of a time in history. Your choice might be related to commerce, education, sports, the arts or government.

Participants will present up to five images of their structure, as well as a short summary of their admiration and/or memories of it.

Pictorial Challenge Reveal: Integrating Text with Images
We challenge you to push the boundaries of your photography by integrating text and graphics with your images from our field trip or any other source. This exercise will test your ability to create visuals that complement and enhance written content, blending design elements seamlessly into your shots. Experiment with various combinations to discover how your photographs can tell a more complete story when paired with typography and graphic elements.

As a result of this, my photography is a direct extension and reflection of my own life. I wish to create an emotional equivalence between the human experience, and nature's hidden language by bridging that barrier through my art.

My wish is to convey a simple yet powerful message - there is more to nature than what is viewed on the surface. We can discover deep metaphors that are mirrors into ourselves, as well as conduits to a deeper understanding of the world around us."

  • Lundi 4 mars 2024
  • 19 h 30 – 21 h 30

Join us as Nic Stover will explain his approach to compositions and understanding light. During the first session Nic will explain how the most impactful and compelling images are the those that have the proper balance of Technique, Vision, and Processing. All of these skills need to be developed and continually refined through the artistic and creative process. He will explain the challenges of what makes a compelling image and review examples from his own work of what works, and perhaps what doesn’t.

For the second session Nic will explore the domain of light and how it can affect our photography. Like all of us Nic doesn’t have mastery of light nor the power to control it but he will talk about what he CAN control, how he reacts to the light he is given, not the light he wants. Nic considers the science and study of light to be one of our most important pursuits in photography.

Bio

Nic Stover is a professional landscape photographer based in San Luis Obispo, California. Nic describes himself as a lifelong entrepreneur who turned “Professional” in 2020, which has allowed him to spend 25% of his year photographing across all 7 continents; although his favorite locations remain the Canadian Rockies, the High Sierra and the Desert Southwest of the USA. Nic’s passion is also his interaction with other photographers through his Nature Photography Classes, where he hosts a regular speaker series, bringing in the very best nature and landscape teachers and educators.

We are very fortunate to welcome distinguished Canadian photographer, Geoffrey James, to our club. Mr. James was appointed the first ever Photographer Laureate of Toronto in 2016, and fortunately for us he has recently returned to Montreal. Although he began his career as journalist, Mr. James initial photographic works represented “the bucolic and utopian.” More recently, his projects demonstrate his roots as a journalist and his “fascination with the effects humans have had on the rural and urban landscape.”

His honours include the Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts, the Canada Council’s Victor Lynch Staunton Prize, and the Roloff Beny Foundation Photography Book Award. Mr. James is a Fellow of the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in Fine Arts, Chicago and a Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, New York. A retrospective of his work, Utopia/Dystopia: The Photographs of Geoffrey James was mounted by the National Gallery of Canada in 2008. This is an LCC meeting at Stewart Hall that you won’t want to miss. Architecture Competition *HYBRID*

The focus of Architecture is on buildings, their structure and shapes whether the images are of the interiors or the exteriors. Evidence of human presence is welcome, provided that these elements complement and contribute to the content of the image—as opposed to dominating it—by helping the image convey a stronger sense of the scale, wonder, beauty, and power of the architecture.

Any photograph found not to comply with the rules (or to the given theme if applicable) will be marked as not adhering to theme. Questions about this competition should be addressed to the Architecture & Urban Landscape group.

In addition to individual buildings, acceptable subjects may also include a limited streetscape of buildings, a collection of buildings linked by a common design aesthetic (eg. Place Ville Marie or Rockefeller Center) and civil engineering structures such as bridges, towers, aqueducts, underground transit stations and tunnels, etc.

Should one get a cropped sensor camera and save some money and weight, or should one go for a full frame sensor? Given the advent of stacked sensors, is it better to get more resolution or should one get a faster camera or just wait another year or two? Where to best put your money as per your needs.

Derek Fahsbender Presents

  • Lundi 4 avril 2022
  • 19 h 30 – 21 h 30
  • 176 Lakeshore Drive, Pointe-Claire, QC, Canada

Derek Fahsbender is a Bronx-based photographer and Official Fujifilm Creator best known for capturing the aesthetic of the urban landscape and the colourful characters within.

Tonight Derek will present photos of life in the boroughs of New York City and its urban landscape. Along the way he will show us how he approaches people and how he relates with them. Drawing inspiration from the unforgiving streets of New York City he remembers while growing up in the 1980’s, Derek’s work seeks to bring the viewer beyond the postcard portrayals of big city life and into the shoes of the common person.

Derek is regarded as much for his photos as he is for the way in which he captures them. His knack for seamlessly immersing himself in all types of environments, paired with an infectious personality, allows him to create photos that convey the emotions he felt when capturing each photo. He is currently working on a number of projects and hopes to soon bring his vision to places outside the boundaries of the five boroughs.

Roger Lemoyne's work has appeared in publications ranging from Paris Match, LIFE, Time magazine, Macleans Magazine, Canadian Art, Colors, l' Actualité, the Globe and Mail, ROB, Communication Arts, GEO, Canadian Geographic, National Geographic, the Walrus. Other venues such as Unicef annual reports, the International Conference on War-Affected Children, Visa pour l’Image, Contact (Toronto), Gijon (Spain) and Zoom (Quebec) photography festivals.

His first book, “Details Obscurs” --a look at the effects of contemporary conflict on civilians-- was published in 2005 and won prizes in France, the USA and Canada.

His images have garnered more than 50 awards internationally, including National Magazine Award 2020 and 2014, the Michener-Deacon Fellowship (2013), a Canada Council for the Arts Grant in 2013, Conseil des Arts et Lettres du Québec grant in 2009, the Dorothea Lange-Paul Taylor Prize (Duke University) in 2007, the “World Understanding Award” from POYi (Missouri School of Journalism) 2006, The Prix Bayeux-Calvados in 2006, the Alexia Grant in 2004, World Press Photo in 1999.

“My primary concern is to document geo-political change in a way that differs from the standard photography generated by news media. I look for a kind of cross-current in a photograph. I don't want it to be about just one thing, one idea, one emotion. Rather, it should be a place where multiple, often contradictory, impressions overlap. This usually leads to some fairly dense, complex images. Nor do I seek to have a singular style or way of working, as "style" can very quickly become a trap. I prefer to explore the medium of photography and seek out different ways of seeing. If there is a constant, it might be empathy. More than anything, I would like viewers to empathize with the people I photograph.” - RL

Botanicals vs Non-Botanicals Photographers

  • Mercredi 17 février 2021

Are you a Botanicals photography aficionado or do you just like to dabble in it occasionally?

Botanicals is challenging Regular Botanicals Photographers and Non-Botanicals Photographers to submit up to 10 photos in their preferred category.

For this challenge, we asked photographers to go out and photograph botanicals (flowers, fruits, vegetables, seedlings, seed pods, fungi, 1 - 3 trees, etc). When submitting your images you must submit in either: (see below)

Submission 1 - Regular Botanicals Photographers
Submission 2 - Non-Botanicals Photographers

We will mix up the photos and view the submissions. We will ask for audience participation in guessing if the images belong to a non-botanicals photographer or to a botanicals photographer.

Viewing members through audience participation will try to determine if the image was taken by a botanical or non-botanical photographer.

Concours

Urban Landscape Competition

Urban Landscape is an image of our man-made environment and the collections of structures in which people live and work. It seeks to capture the larger patterns of the urban environment which surrounds us.

Urban landscapes are images that capture a scene within a city or town. They can be vast (think cityscape or a shot of the city from above) or at minimum it is a medium view.

Urban landscapes are less interested in the building and its architectural style and more interested in in the pattern of buildings and structures and/or what happens in and around it. Evidence of human presence is welcome, provided that these elements complement and contribute to the content of the image—as opposed to dominating it.

We strive for closer connections in a time of social distancing and search for comfort in the midst of the fear caused by the global pandemic. As we come to terms with this new normal, with no end in sight, the challenge is to capture this reality. At the heart of this pandemic are people, young and old.

Tonight we will see the images that have been captured of these people in all of their environments, as they adapt, grow, change, live, and love in response to the new normal.

Botanicals Reveal: The World Of Alice In Wonderland

  • Lundi 23 novembre 2020

This challenge will require your childhood memories of the adventures of Alice In Wonderland. Picture yourself as Alice when she transformed into a small person, now look “up” or “down” and “beyond” at all the botanicals. Imagination is key in this challenge. Your own composites can be used and editing is key to produce a dreamy fairytale look at Alice and her surroundings in her adventures! Go to you gardens, forests, bushes, fungi etc. (small insects if they appear on flora are acceptable but it shouldn’t take over the image).

This is a fantasy challenge … when editing - pay close attention to colour, blurred backgrounds or anything that will make us believe that we are with Alice in her travels!

Natural Landscape Competition Results

The first competition of the year is an LCC favorite - Natural Landscape. Last year there were no less than 142 submissions by over 50 members - an LCC record. (Not 100% sure about that but I defy you to contest it!).

Since most of us spent our summer and half the winter in Montreal, it will be interesting to see what is submitted this year!

A Natural Landscape is a medium to wide field of view image—as opposed to a detail or closeup—of outdoor environment incorporating elements such as mountains, canyons, lakes, snow, rivers, forests, fields, the sea, and natural geological formations. Evidence of human presence such as structures or cultivation—even people—is welcome, provided the presence of these elements complements and contributes to the natural content of the image—as opposed to dominating it—by helping the image convey a stronger sense of the scale, wonder, beauty, and power of the outdoor world.

Urban Landscape Competition - Winter 2020

Any photograph found not to comply with the rules (or to the given theme if applicable) will be marked as not adhering to theme. Questions about this competition should be addressed to the Landscape group.
